The road from Québec City to Tadoussac has got to be one of most gorgeous and exciting you’ll ever drive in your life. Flanked by the St. Lawrence River on one side and the mountains on the other, the drive brings you Québec at its most sublime. Pure air, sparkling water, magnificent peaks and picturesque villages — this is one experience you won’t want to end! (And we haven’t even mentioned the whales!)

Start: Québec City
Finish: Whale-watching in Tadoussac
Itinerary: Highway 138
Distance: 212 km/132 miles
Optional road: Route 362 between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie

Beauport

6 km/4 miles

You’re barely on your way before Parc de la Chute-Montmorency grabs your attention. An 83-metre (272-foot) waterfall in a glorious natural setting — you’ll simply have to stop. And a worthy detour it is, too, with a sumptuous view of the St. Lawrence, Île d’Orléans and Québec City. There’s also Manoir Montmorency waiting to be discovered. Whatever you do, don’t miss the Loto-Québec International Fireworks Competition starting July 21!

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

34 km/21 miles

Your second stop brings you to the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré shrine. This medieval-inspired basilica, with its sublime stained glass and remarkable rose window, is …heavenly!

Baie Saint-Paul

91 km/57 miles

Nicknamed le paradis des artistes (“artists’ paradise”), Baie-Saint-Paul is a pretty little town nestled in the Charlevoix hills. Artists have flocked here for years to try and capture its legendary beauty. Not surprisingly, perhaps, Baie-Saint-Paul also boasts the highest concentration of art galleries and craft boutiques in Canada.

Accessible via the town of Saint-Urbain, Parc national des Grands-Jardins is a favourite among hikers, cyclists, and sport fishing and canoeing enthusiasts. Its combination of biodiversity and breathtaking scenery will have you walking on air!

Take Route 381 North to the village of Saint-Urbain for 29 km/18 miles

La Malbaie

141 km/88 miles

La Malbaie owes its name to the singular fact that the bay empties completely of water at low tide. This small city features a sumptuous casino at the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu Hotel, as well as an immense golf course that serves up superb views of the St. Lawrence. Fore!

Saint-Siméon

174 km/108 miles

Thanks to its astounding topography, the Les Palissades mountain adventure park is the perfect place for anyone who enjoys rock climbing, swimming, hiking and fishing. Whale-watching cruises are on the menu, too!

Baie-Sainte-Catherine

209 km/130 miles

The last stage before you reach your destination, Baie-Sainte-Catherine is where to take the ferry to Tadoussac. Before you board, though, you might just want to take the time to enjoy its lovely sandy beach and hiking trails. You can also head seaward in a boat or zodiac (inflatable raft) in search of sea mammals!

Tadoussac

212 km/132 miles

Known as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Tadoussac gets its name from the Montagnais Indian word meaning “the bosom,” a reference to the hills just west of the town. During your stay, you can opt to hop aboard a cruise ship heading into the fjord or out to sea for some whale watching. You can also visit the Centre d'interprétation des mammifères marins (marine mammal interpretation centre), the Saguenay—St. Lawrence Marine Park or Parc national du Saguenay. Tadoussac is one of the loveliest towns in Québec, so make the most of it!
