| The Îles de la Madeleine, or Magdalen Islands, form an archipelago in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, more than 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the Gaspé coast. There are a dozen islands, six of which are linked by long sand dunes. The region’s charm is evident in the locals’ warm welcome and colourful accents, as well as the deep blue sea, long sandy beaches, rolling green fields and dales, and striking red cliffs sculpted by the sea and the wind. The islands’ effect on visitors is immediate: they feel transported to another world. |

The archipelago offers the ideal mix of ingredients (climate, varied bodies of water, and lots of beaches) for lovers of sailing, sliding and wind sports. |
| |
There are three ways of getting to the Îles de la Madeleine: by plane, by car-carrying ferry or even on board a cruise ship (departing from Montréal). |
| |
The houses dotting the islands are traditionally painted bright colours so that fishermen in their fishing boats can recognize them from afar. |
| |
The region boasts more than 300 kilometres (187 miles) of superb beaches, and the temperature of the water lapping at the islands easily reaches 18°C (64°F) in mid-August. |

Many of the smaller roads lead to the tops of buttes that offer spectacular views, but they aren’t all drivable. Take a fitness break and climb them on foot or by bike! |
| |
Note that the Îles de la Madeleine are in the Atlantic Time Zone, so don’t forget to set your watch ahead one hour once you arrive. |
| |
The air is pure and healthy here, but the winds are also very strong. Be sure to take along a windbreaker or long-sleeved sweater when you go out hiking and strolling. |
| |
The landscapes in the region are unbelievably scenic, worthy of the most beautiful postcards. Bring your camera and be ready to immortalize your trip. |
