To fully appreciate the charm of Old Québec, what’s better than taking your time to explore its cobblestone streets? From the famous Plains of Abraham battlefield to the city’s fortifications, you can tour unique historic attractions that include the majestic Château Frontenac.
1. The departure point for this walking tour is at the Discovery Pavilion of the Plains of Abraham. Before heading to Old Québec, why not enjoy yourself exploring the exhibition rooms or participating in a fun bus tour during which you will learn about the major historic events that took place on site!
2. Then head for Grande Allée Avenue and turn right to head towards Old Québec. On your left, you will notice the Parliament Building which is home to the National Assembly with its 125 Québec members. Free thirty-minute commentated tours are given.
3. When you pass under the Saint-Louis Gate, you will be entering into the last fortified city found north of Mexico. At the Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site of Canada, you can explore 4.6 km (2.9 mi) of fortifications still encircling the city by walking along the trail that runs around the walls or by participating in one of the ninety-minute guided tours, departing from Dufferin Terrace.
4. After passing the Saint-Louis Gate, you can also turn right towards the Citadelle de Québec – Royal 22e Régiment Museum, where military ceremonies and commented tours of the buildings are given. The Citadelle also provides an excellent point of view from atop Cape Diamant.
5. After these historic tours, go down Saint-Louis Street, which features many restaurants, cafés and boutiques. Once at the bottom, you will find yourself at the foot of the majestic Château Frontenac, where guided tours are offered by historic figures. To make your life as a king last a little longer, take the time to savour a tea or a delicious meal at one of the famous hotel’s restaurants.
6. After admiring the landscape from Dufferin Terrace, cross Place d’Armes to discover the lovely Trésor Street and its artists and artisans who exhibit their works in an open-air art gallery.
7. At the end of Trésor Street, you will find standing before you the Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral-Basilica, which teems with magnificent works of art. Four governors of New France and the bishops of Québec are buried in the crypt.
